Generation & Application of High-Order Harmonics
Coherent extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray radiation produced by high order harmonic generation (HHG) of high power femtosecond laser pulses are currently finding wide application in physics, chemistry, biochemistry and biology. The main activity of our group is to improve the conversion efficiencies and the coherence properties of our HHG source and to increase the harmonic photon energy down to the water window region between 2 and 5 nm. The HHG source will be applied to the development of new imaging techniques and to the study of ultrafast dynamics of atom and molecules.

Function of Molecular Chaperones in the Export & Display of Parasite Proteins
Chaperones play an essential role in the folding and display of proteins. The malaria parasite exports virulence factors to the surface of its host cell, which have to be unfolded and folded during this transport. In addition we look at the role of chaperones in the protection of the parasite during fever episodes. By imaging and modifying these processes we aim to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. This in turn could enable us to interfere and find new ways to combat malaria.

Experimental Methods At Monash University
Our research at Monash University concentrates on the reconstruction of nano-structured and crystalline objects through a fundamental understanding of the diffraction phenomenon.

Experimental Methods At University of Melbourne
Our research at the University of Melbourne concentrates on the study of the role of coherence in X-ray physics. We also pursue projects in phase-contrast imaging for optical, electron and X-ray microscopy.

Experimental Methods at La Trobe University
This project concentrates on experimental methods in X-ray imaging. Within CXS we undertake research at synchrotron facilities in Australia and overseas into the use of coherent diffractive imaging methods for imaging biological samples. We also have active programs in the development and application of X-ray tomography and in the micro- and nano- fabrication and testing of X-ray optics, samples and sample holders.
